Conceptualizing smoothness and density as landscape elements in visual resource management

چکیده

Several dilemmas stand in the way of meeting the goals of visual resource management. The landscape is rich in potential qualities that can be assessed, but the choice of appropriate attributes is more difficult. What is readily measured is not necessarily what is most useful to examine. Furthermore, what is readily discernible from eyelevel photographs may not be readily available as mapped information. Two attributes, smoothness and density, are the focus of the current study. Their choice is based on prior empirical efforts and their promise as qualities that could be translated to mapped (e.g. geographic information system; GIS) form. Though intuitively straightforward, definitions of these concepts in terms that are amenable to computer-based spatial format posed a variety of challenges. The present effort has developed working definitions of these attributes that make them storable in other contexts and by other researchers. Further, an initial exploration of the relationship of these attributes to different landcover types suggests that although each landcover type tends to have its own characteristic range, these attributes also permit meaningful distinctions within these categories.

LAGA: A Software for Landscape Allocation using Genetic Algorithm

In this paper, Landscape Allocation using Genetic Algorithm (LAGA), a spatial multi-objective land use optimization software is introduced. The software helps in searching for optimal land use when multiple objectives such as suitability, area, cohesion and edge density indices are simultaneously involved. LAGA is a flexible and easy to use genetic algorithm-based software for optimizing the sp...

Reviewing the role of urban landscape and vision on improving environmental quality (Case Study: Sa’di Street – Semnan)

Quality of urban areas and improvement of it have always been considered as one of the main issues in the process of urbanization. It might be possible to consider this importance as the result of fundamental changes in intellectual patterns during the past two decades in one side and its proposal in all aspects of human life on the other side though this is one of the main influential concepts...

سنجش کیفیت منظر مسیرهای پیاده با استفاده از تکنیک یادداشت‌برداری و تحلیل عناصر بصری منظر (نمونه موردی: بافت تاریخی هارونیه اصفهان)

Abstract Old and historical contexts always consider as the major and historical and cultural heritage of cities. Nowadays the role of urban landscape in historical contexts and pedestrian paths is greatly considered by the researchers in urban landscaping, designing and planning. Urban landscape is cultural capitals of the cities and pedestrians are quite interested in it. The rate of effec...

Investigation of Rangeland Changes Based on Landscape Metrics Analysis (Case Study: Kezab Rangelands, Yazd Province, Iran)

Adverse changes in rangeland vegetation can be considered as one of the criteria for land degradation. Some of these changes can be evaluated through monitoring the spatial changes of landscape parameters. This study aimed to investigate the landscape changes in Kezab rangelands of Yazd province, central Iran. Landsat satellite images of 1990, 2002, and 2013, and landscape metrics including Tot...
